A 14-year-old won the world
Nigeria hosted the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships, the first time the event has been held in Africa. Nigerians took all three rapid medals. The player on the top step was fourteen.

Abuja held the FIDE World Amateur Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships from 1 to 8 August 2026. The rapid ran from 2 to 5 August. The blitz followed on 6 and 7 August. Nigerian players took gold, silver and bronze in the rapid, and the one on the top step was fourteen years old.
It was the first time Africa hosted the FIDE World Amateur Championships. FIDE ran the event with the Nigeria Chess Federation, in the Bolton White Event Hall. Senator Ibrahim Hassan Dankwambo, President of the Nigeria Chess Federation, welcomed the players. Olalekan Adeyemi, a FIDE Vice President, was Chief Arbiter. Sergei Indeikin sat as FIDE Delegate, and Alhaji Shehu Dikko, Chairman of the National Sports Commission, was in the hall.
The rapid
Entry was open to anyone rated under 2300. Three rating bands ran inside that, under 2300, under 2000 and under 1700, each with an Open and a Women title. Eleven rounds at 15+10 decided the standings. Ekunke Odey Goodness of Nigeria finished on nine points, half a point clear of the field, and became the first FIDE World Amateur Rapid champion. He was fourteen.

Round three, on the first playing day, showed the shape of it. Ekunke beat Vasia Ajuba. FM Bomo Lovet Kigigha beat Lanre Seye Oluwalasinu. CM Toluwanimi Okemakinde beat AIM Sahil Sanjay Shejal, who would win the blitz four days later. Unwana and Kigigha both ended on eight and a half, and the bronze went to Kigigha on tie-break.
The blitz
The blitz ran on 6 and 7 August, eleven rounds at 3+2. India took the top two places. AIM Shejal Sahil Sanjay won on nine points, and CM Pankaj Sharma finished half a point behind him. Nigeria held every place from third to tenth.

What it means here
A Nigerian teenager is a world amateur champion, and he is not alone in the frame. Joseph Sambo was seventeen and finished fourth in the rapid. Sandra Osarugue Omoruyi beat Odafe Benedict Efemuai in round three and took a category title in the blitz. Nigeria filled eight straight places in the blitz table.
None of that started in August. BEEE runs the Spectacular Chess Championship in Abuja for children aged 10 to 14, which is the age a result like this gets built at.
